Trance Tools , Instruments of harmony for the expanding mind - what is your favorite ?
    #4694831 - 09/22/05 01:25 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

If folks could perhaps list their top three trance instruemnts, I would be curious  I have played guitar for some time , and various other strings, a modified guitar ( a broken guitar turned into a diatonic harp ) chestnut shell rattles , drums and such , panpipes, I am awaiting 'my Kantele ' in the mail , I have heard these in music, seen them, seen videos of them played, and I must say, they seem to be very much a instrument that lends to meditation ( Kantele is a finnish lapharp, that has very similar relatives in other parts of the baltic and russia )They are a member of the Zither group of instruments , and are very simple to play ( They typicaly have 5 or 10 strings, however 11 , 15, and more strings to exist , the traditional instruement was a five string , and 10 string is fairly common ) The kantele is a old instruement by any measure, It is spoken of in the Kalevala , a collection of finnish poems, I myself am half polish by blood , but even a passing look at my family , has lead me to conclude this was only in recent origin , as my mothers family is scandenavian without any doubts ... So that being said I was drawn to this instrument , through somewhat of fateful introduction to many friends from Finland . In anycase , these instruments are absolutely beautiful to listen to , not typicaly played for large groups of people, they are instruments that were played for the family , or most typicaly, for one's own ear, some of the poems copy pasted mentioning it from Kalevala

-- V?in?m?inen, Ilmarinen and Lemmink?inen
set out to steal the Sampo from Pohjola.
In the course of the journey, their boat runs
aground on the shoulders of a giant pike.
V?in?m?inen kills the pike and fashions a
kantele from its jawbone. No one else is
able to play the instrument, but V?in?m?inen
holds all living things spellbound with his
playing. --

--V?in?m?inen puts the people of Pohjola
to sleep with his kantele playing and the
Sampo is taken to the travellers' boat
and rowed away. The people of Pohjola
awaken and Louhi, the mistress of Pohjola,
sends obstacles in the path of the raiders
to hinder their escape. The seafarers
survive, but the kantele falls into the sea.
Louhi sets off in pursuit and transforms
herself into a giant bird of prey. In the
ensuing battle the Sampo is smashed and
falls into the sea. Some of the fragments
remain in the sea, but others wash ashore
and bring Finland good fortune and prosperity.
Louhi is left with only the worthless lid of
the Sampo and an impoverished land. --

--In vain, V?in?m?inen seeks the kantele which fell into
the sea. He makes a new kantele from birchwood and
his playing once again delights the whole of creation. ---

Err yeah so ... That was long, what are your folks favorite trance instruments ? It may verywell be that some of the folks in western washington , in the coming weeks, might encounter someone in the forests , trembling thoes strings , among a group of fly agaric ... I am strange that way  - Tranceharper
