Drink spiking rare [AU]

Drink spiking rare; drunkeness common: report
September 22, 2005 - theaustralian.news.com.au

PEOPLE who seek treatment at hospital emergency departments claiming their drinks have been spiked are mostly just drunk, new research claimed.

Doctors have completed Australia's first medical study on drink spiking, which typically occurs when a sedative is slipped into another person's drink.

The aim is usually to stupefy the vicitm in order to take advantage of them.

However research at Perth's Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital found patients' symptoms are often caused by excessive alcohol and illicit drug use, rather than sedatives.

The hospital's doctors and researchers from the University of Western Australia found only four definite cases of drink spiking among 97 study participants - but none involved sedatives.

However, 21 per cent of patients tested had drugs such as amphetamines and cannabis in their bloodstream.

Many of the participants reported only consuming a few drinks, but mistook their drunkenness for drink spiking.

The majority had a much higher blood alcohol level than they thought - with the average level close to 0.2.

Wow. Now that is a shocker.
