perlite without cakes.. quick question!
    #4693770 - 09/22/05 03:39 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

so i read the perlite faq and it talks about cakes. im not interesting in using cakes, so if this is the case would it be bad to put the grain spawn and substrate directly on the perlite? also, is a wood chip substrate good for cubensis? ive noticed on this site thats the most popular and easiest mushroom to grow, from the mushroom cultivator ive been wanting to grow cyanascens, but on this site i gt the impress its a lot harder and as a beginner id rather try something easier my first time..

i want to appologize for always making new threads im just curious and feel like the only way i wont mess up is if i bug people all the time! thanks for your help guys.

**EDIT**

also, i got a 5gal aquarium for my casing, are there any ideas for reliable lids i could put on this? prefferably plastic possibly prefferated for air exchange. thanks!!!!@!@!$#$YDFB

Don't ever put cakes on the perlite... I recomend adding hydrogen peroxide diluted tothe perlite water( look up the ratio.. I think it's 2% don't quote me)
Wood does well with oyster mushrooms.

hmmm what if im not using cakes, though? i guess that would be the same affect, but i guess i dont understand why it would be unhealthy, unless it creates to much moisture directly to the mushrooms.

so what if i, lets say.. split the aquarium up into 3 parts.. lets say 14 of it can be perlite on one side, and 1/4 can be perlite on the other then 2/4 can be the grain spawn and substrate in the center, while the perlite and grain spawn/substrate is not making any direct contact, perhaps by some modified plastic containers.

this is what im thinking.. a horrible image drawin in CAD... basically the top is defined by the thicker ridge which is usually where the lid would go and the bottom is divided into almost 4 equal parts.. assuming the aquarium is 10" wide, the perlite gets 2" wide of space on each side of the grain spawn at a generous 1.5-2" (as advised in the perlite FAQ).. possibly placed in a cut out tray of somesort, so the water doesnt leak into the substrate/grain and prohibit mushroom fruiting..

anyways how does that look?

I've often wondered this myself. What if we just put the bare grain spawn directly on the perlite? You should give it a try, treat it like cakes and see what happens. Grain spawn is so easy to make, it's worth a couple quart jars for the experiment.

Ya. Why not? It dont hurt them. I suggest you do a lil more research before telling people not to do things.

As you can see, it isnt bad at all, lol.

I've seen pics of some dude putting his sub with a casing layer over it straight on the perlite. I was trying to find the pics, but I don't remember where I saw them. I don't see how this is any different from PF cakes being put on the perlite. As long as the substrate is 100% colonized, I don't see any problem with it other than a big mess. It would just be a big cake of whole grains instead of BRF/verm.
