Dads Home Grown Cow Shit.

My dad has 3 cows in his back yards and they shit a lot. Could i use the cow crap as a substrate ? Also does it have to be fresh or the hard old kind ??

Use the hard old kind. Finding some shreaded straw would really help you out, mix it in like 25-50%. Add coir for fiberous texture with the straw, and chunky verm for airy fluffy water holding. Maybe a bit of perlite too. Composting it would be the best bet, but otherwise this would be the second. But if your dad lives in a farm area, horse poo should be redily availble as well and already comes in a nice fiberous texture, just add some chunky verm.
