Any texans in here?
    #4692961 - 09/22/05 12:41 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Have you all be watching news?
I plan on boarding up my windows, crossing my fingers and riding her out.
They said that she's stronger then Katrina and major flooding and wind damage is expected.
I was here for that huge flood in 2000 and my house was completely unscathed I"m hopeing for the same conclusion.
I'm only worried about my grandmother who lives with me and would need a/c and power for her oxygen machine
Would like to hear what other texans are doing.

oh and wish me luck!

ATX in tha hizzouse, don't have too much to worry about here. Maybe some flooding here and there, nothing new. Anyways, good luck, it shouldn't be too bad

I'm up in dallas but my family is down in houston. They might be paying me a visit. Hopefully it won't be too bad. The house is at a decent elevation so it should be safe from flooding.

You're going to "ride out" 175 mph winds? That should be quite a story to tell the kids, unless you're either quite a distance inland or not in the direct path of the hurricane.

That's what I'm thinking too.  NOBODY in Austin is making a big deal about this storm.  I'll be prepared for anything but I'm not expecting much.

OH FUCK I did not see that this is a category FIVE.

What should I do? I'm in Austin. I'd rather not die. Any suggestions? I have Saturday off, maybe Kevin and I will leave Friday night.

Forecasters said Rita could be the most intense hurricane on record ever to hit Texas, and easily one of the most powerful ever to plow into the U.S. mainland. Category 5 is the highest on the scale, and only three Category 5 hurricanes are known to have hit the U.S. mainland - most recently, Andrew, which smashed South Florida in 1992.

I'm trying to see if there are any recommendations to evacuate Austin now, but I'm not seeing any.

They are saying to just stay in a state of readiness. And to expect power outages.

I live in Katy, just west of Houston. Everyone in town is freaked out and leaving. at a category 5, it is still going to be a category 3 or more 60 miles inland. They say its going to blow the roofs off of houses here. nobody wants to stay, but we cant just leave our house. i mean! Dam! 110 mile wind even after 60 miles inland! that is faster then what my Astro Van can go. and it tops 90-95.

I've been wathcing TWC for a few hours now,(im addicted, love storms)
They say its a catagory 5 and has hurricane force winds 170 miles wide. The eye wall is 23 miles wide which contains winds up to 175mph.

The 175mph winds extend 80 miles from the eye wall. If your not worried about the rain you should deffinatly consider the wind strength.

By the way....175mph winds is equal to an F3 Tornado, but a helluva lot bigger.

Like Ron White said "Its not THAT the wind is blowin, Its WHAT the wind is blowin"

Make sure your fully prepared. Im on the east coast,The last hurricane I went through (2yrs ago) was just downgraded to a Tropical Storm when it so kindly put a tree in my familys roof (ISABEL) and we didnt have power for 2 and a half weeks.

I wish y'all all the best. Good luck!!.

Take care n be safe...

edit...Damn im slow, it took 20 min. to write that...lol
Im off to bed, nite all...

I'm in Ft Worth. I'm not sure how bad it's supposed to get here but I'm just gonna treat it like a strong thunderstorm and chill at home.
