finding powdered (or grinding) oyster shells.....
    #4691727 - 09/21/05 08:56 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Hey everyone. Quick question. I can find crushed oyster shells easily. The problem is, I would like them in powder form. SO, either 1) can someone shoot me a link to find the powdered oyster shells? OR 2) can someone tell me how to powder-fy crushed oyster shells without ruining my blender/coffee grinder by dulling the blades.

(I would prefer the later because of convenience.)

Thanks!

Just got the package from this place today, I've used them before, and is good quality stuff, decent price. You can find bigger bags cheaper, if you want a 50lb supply..but you pay in shipping. I usualy just get 10 lbs at a time, lasts a bit and small, lighter box.

Thats what I was thinking. I used to dig for oysters and clams, they are very hard suckers. What about limestone? Would that have the same effect? WHat do you use for a casing buffer?

I don't use anything. I just buy Jiffy Mix from wally world.

It comes with a near neutral pH right out of the bag and it works pretty damn good!

No problem! Don't forget to sterilize it in your PC or the microwave before using it. Some people have said they even used it right out of the bag with no sterilization and did OK. IMO I woudn't risk it.

Exactly, I was planning on putting it in widemouth quarts with the lid upside down so it wouldn't seal, then sterilizing it. Sound like a plan?

That's the way to do it. Bring it up to field capacity. Then PC for 1.5 hours.

They are wet from rinsing the casing off. It's not neccessary, but I like really clean mushrooms.

Sorry I forgot the link..

Results are much better if you add that to the jiffy mix, with chunky verm and a bit of coir.
