Is this a false chanterelle?
    #4690397 - 09/21/05 03:38 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

From a hard wood forest
3" across

Also, I told a amateur naturalist once that I picked mushrooms to get spore prints etc and they BLASTED me saying I should NEVER pick a mushroom that it would never grow back in the same place. True?
That is why there is so little info.

Yes it appears to be a false white chanterelle , thoes look to be gills not veins  And on the topic of picking a mushroom killing it , I dont think it will , if one harvests it by cuting the stem I dont think much harm is done aside from removing the fruiting body perhaps before it can drop spores , taking a rake to the forest floor however , would likely cause some harm ... -Tranceharper

That "naturalist" knew nothing of what he spoke.

Most mushrooms come in a series of flushes from the same mycelial structure when harvested. It also helps fruiting down the road, as when you handled the mushroom, it most likely dropped spores.

It's ridiculous how people can work themselves up over what they don't know.

it does indeed look like a false chanterelle, and your "naturalist" may need to do a bit of reading, in general, if a mushroom has grown there once, it will grow there again as long as there are no big changes or damage done to the mycelium
