Eggs as a buffer
    #4690327 - 09/21/05 03:14 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

I have read on this site somewhere that egg shells are calcuim carbonite...I think...if thats the case...how much pulverized egg shell ratio for a coir verm mix?

5% total volume of the casing, I believe. Better grind those shells to dust, assuming you can use them.

Take your own kitchen size trashcan to a breakfast restaurant like "waffle house" and ask them if the cook will toss all his shells in it and you will come pick it up ass soon as they call and say it's gotta go.

Probably one good breakfast rush will get you 10-20 dozen eggs shells.

Just an idea....

Maybe 5% if your are using hydrated lime or something.
If your using something like crushed/powdered egg shell or even powdered oyster shell you better add like 25%. Egg shell and oyster shell are not very water soluble so 5% is just not enough.

Oh yeah, how much for a coir/verm mix?
None!

You don't buffer coir, you could but its not necessary, just peat.

Sir, after you suggested that to me on my post, I searched agar's posts and found very good information, indicating that egg shells are indeed a suitable buffer. I think 25% is probably more accurate, I'm just a newb, but what bamaman said makes sense. hopefully someone who KNOWS for sure will chime in, just to make sure we don't mess everything up.

Not 25%...it's 2.5%.

Here?s what SCATMANRAV told me on the thread ?Finally... fruiting closet w/pics[UPDATED!]??.

?and here?

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/4638244#Post4638244

Here is what MYCOFILE says on the same thread about it...

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/4638287#Post4638287

With a peat and verm casing they say 2.5% total volume, although more doesn?t hurt or help.

BTW... they both use a calcium carbonate buffer WITH COIR as well.

5% hydrated lime? Are you kidding? You use a few tablespoons hydrated lime to a bucket of peat...no where near 1%, which would be plenty enough to burn your myc.

5-10% to peat moss is all you need, so in a 50/50 mix, it would be 2.5-5% total volume. A tablespoon of hydrated lime to a bucket might do you good too, but hydrated lime will burn myc very quickly, so its best to have a pH meter when messing with it.
