does anyone know the answer!
    #4690025 - 09/21/05 12:00 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

I posted this question a few days ago and no one seemed to know, im hoping some wiseman will stumble upon it this time. I have read numerous conflicting accounts of what kind/how much ph neutralizer to use in your casing. Could someone tell me definitively once and for all what would be right. My dog plans on casing 60/40 verm coir mix, and has plain old lawn and garden pulverized limestone ( it is very fine). How much of this should i put in my casing, and does using this ph neutralizer really increase yeilds by all that much?

id' say half a cup or so.

and no it doesnt increase yields...it makes your casing able to produce more flushes

at least that is waht ive come to understand.

Producing more flushes = more yield from the casing, doesn't it ?

With a buffering agent, you can't just say a set amount, as in 1/2 cup without knowing how much peat he's using.

You will use anywhere from 4% - 10%, depending on the characteristics of your particular buffering agent, by volume of the amount of PEAT used.

That would be if you needed a buffering agent. Since coir is in the proper ph range you don't really need one. A buffering agent adjusts the ph level immediately, which would adjust the coir out of the proper range. If you want to add something to help, add some crushed oyster shell. It has a long term effect. It will help keep the level right by counteracting the effects caused by mycelium waste. It might help you get an extra flush or so. You can add it between 5%-10% by casing volume. Helps give the casing layer a nice texture also

Good Luck.

Isn't the measurement of the limestone placed in the casing relative to the size of the casing - for example if i had a tiny casing 1/2 cup would be far too much, if i had a huge casing 1/2 cup would be ineffective

From what I hear, you dont really need a buffer with just verm&coir.

What I have read so far seems to say that the lime really doesn't do much since it only balances the pH for a short time and plus the fact it can burn up your mycelium. That's two strikes against it right there. I would agree with Hippie Chick and just use crushed oyster shells. Why take a chance with something that probably won't have any impact anyways.

Buy a simple pH test kit and balance the initial pH of your casing to the 6.8 - 7.2 range using the lime. Add some crushed oyster shell as a buffer to help keep the pH from changing over time and multiple flushes.
