Genuine hope depends precisely on our capacity to realistically limit the imagined future.

I think its right, I belive that one should set a long term goal and not really try to control how they get there, but just go in that general direction. When you try to control every aspect of your imagianed future, I think thats when many lose hope through fustration.

i rarely think of hope as "realistic". that's an interesting POV you've presented.

I would question (leave out) the words 'precisely' and 'realistically'...

abandon hope. begin with hopelessness. put that up on your fridge rather than 'every day in every way i'm getting better and better.' i didn't say that, pema chodron, some buddhist nun said it, so please don't flame me for it.
when shit starts hitting the propelor in major ways and it relentlessly keeps splattering, you'll be happy you practiced those simple precepts.

what if hope has a rational basis? yesterday i hoped i would still be alive today...
yet if i had abadoned this hope, i would have done a bunch of foolish things, like quit my job for example.

Good advice.
Hope is useful only as an aid to greatness, but it rarely is. I notice the negative emotions create great people much more often than positive ones, so I try to avoid hope like the plague.

Many of the great dictators, revolutionary artists and people who would be remember for hundreds or thousands of years did their actions out of negativity. Most of these people were the people with true power.
The ones who acted out of the illusion of goodness usually lacked true power in their lives. They became popular after they died, but what did it matter? They never even got to witness their own greatness, but a dictator always does. If I had to choose, I would always go with the latter. But I may be unique in that aspect.

I think it's important to make the distinction between wishful thinking, and faith in good fortune.
I hope that I will win the lottery.
but I also HAVE HOPE that I will find someone to love and marry, make a family, and grow old and die a happy person.

Hope is some individually subjective perspective of future. Wish or faith ? uh..
