A dream experiment -- UPDATE 10-05-05! RESULTS ARE IN!
    #4688771 - 09/21/05 12:16 AM (18 years, 6 months ago)

NOTE TO EVERYONE, PARTICIPANT OR NOT - PLEASE DO NOT POST ANY BOOK TITLES IN THIS THREAD, TO AVOID CONTAMINATION OF THE RESULTS OF THIS EXPERIMENT!!!

After talking to a friend of mine, I'd like to see how this works out with as many of you who'd like to try it! I know a lot of people in S&P are into dreams in a big way (and are apparenty good at remembering them!) so this should be right up our alley in here!

I'd like you to try and find a book, in one of your dreams. Not a specific book, don't go in thinking "I want to find Brave New World", you just want to find a book. Any book.

Now the key part is, try to remember the title of the book. That's the key part to the experiment. If you feel you are able to, you can also try to remember the physical characteristics of the book - size, age, color, binding, ect.

After you have your book's title (and maybe it's characteristics) I'd prefer it if you PM the results to me instead of posting them right off here in the thread! This is hopefully to avoid any cross-contamination with some people reading what other people found and then finding that themselves.

The experiment will run for a MAX of 2-weeks, at which point I will post the results in this thread.

If you are going to participate, please respond in this thread so I know how many to expect. If I get all the responses early, I may end the experiment after just 1-week, but we'll see how quick everyone is at finding their book

I'll try but I'm not very good with the conjuring up a lucid state (I'm assuming you'd have to be in that state to remember to choose a book), it just happens spontaneously.

Yeah I had to wait for it to happen spontaneously, too. Took me a couple months, I think, as I'm not a very active dreamer so much as a reactive dreamer :smirk:

And actually in my case it was casually noticing and reading a book title in a dream that SPARKED the lucid state! I saw the the title and the whole dream just stopped - I knew I was supposed to remember what I could about it. It was a very profound moment in the dream.

Respect the original idea of the thread. If you can't do it don't post them ...

Aw come on, man :frown:

The idea was to not contaminate the experiment with any book titles. I specifically asked anyone who participated to PM me their results so as to not contaminate anyone else's dreams.

Now if anyone does report that book, I have have to throw out their results. Thanks man. That's really cool of you.

Yeah, there are only hundreds of thousands, if not millions more titles to choose from.

How much of my first post did you read? I specifically said the idea was NOT to choose a book. The idea is to let it come naturally, which it can't do with you contaminating the thread

It it too much to ask you to edit-out the book titles you have posted?

I have designed this experiment the way I want to run it. I have a reason for that.

Why are you messing things up? What is your problem?

I'll try, but my lucid dreaming techniques are rusty at best these days.

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity. ~ Albert Einstein

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Absense of evidence is not evidence of absense...

"Religion is a defense against a religious experience"
              Carl G. Jung

"So really, ordinary reality is a kind of chemical habit, sanctioned by culture, which says it's okay to use certain drugs, eat certain foods, and have certain sexual behaviors. However, when you transcend all this pre-conditioning by returning to the original wisdom of the animal body, then you discover this immense dimension of opportunity. For some people, it is a frightening risk. To me, that's the psychedelic experience."
