Hunting in Karantaka state (India)
    #4689025 - 09/21/05 03:25 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

After searching for a week on entheogenic fungi of Karantaka state India, I finally found some work documented by Natarajan & Raman from 1983 citing that 6 species of psychoactive fungi containing psilocybin naturally occur in the area where I intend to stay.

Has anyone had experience hunting in general in India? I am mostly concerned with cultural taboos and how collecting in public is perceived among the indigenous peoples.

I never been in India but I had an experience with some people of a nation named Buryats. Most of them are Buddhists (so named Northern Branch of Buddhism) and I can tell you they have very strong religious taboo concerning mushrooms. All the mushies are considered as broods of Satan's underground evil world. Picking and all the more eating of any mushroom is strictly prohibited. One friend of mine told me that he was frying some edibles found in a nearest forest, and his Buryat landlady threw out that frying pan next because "it was contaminated by hellish fruits".. So I advise you don't bring together mushrooms and Buddhists..

-Hey, what are doing here in the forest?!
-I'm..I'm just picking mushrooms..
-Look, he's  j u s t  picking mushrooms! Is that you who planted them?!

I live in the Maharashtra state next to Karnataka. There are no taboos in particular amongst indegenous tribes/peoples. I have been picking in my state for many years now, without any trouble at all.

Well, okay, the most trouble I got into was being chased by a bull. Most people will think you crazy for picking mushrooms, but not bothered one bit.

The most common mushroom you will find in season will be copelandia cyanescens, depending on where you live you might also find copelandia tiruvelensis (spelling?). MJohn has mentioned that these copelandias have been reclassified as Hypholomas, so I am not so sure about the nomenclature anymore.

If you are planning on coming to India, drop me a line, we'll hook up and share...

First of all, you live in the coolest country in the world. I love India and Indians too, especially in the south where people seem just a wee bit more laid back. I remember taking a bus trip out of Mysore once to some Hindu temples with pornographic (in today's lingo) frescos. Should be Karnataka. What about cubensis?? Cows, and the subtropics.
Anyway, post your Indian finds of any sort, by all means.

Hi shroomedindia,

That would be great. I plan on arriving at the tail end of the monsoon season (mid october) and will be staying for a few weeks. I'll drop a line once everything gets settled.

I just wanted to wish you good luck out there. When I was there typhoon 15 started to bring out the fruitings. Especially around commercial shopping centers in Iwatsuki city where the landscaping was mulched with palm fronds from the spring. I would like to see some of your new finds.

As I look out the window I see the rain coming down. Looks like it is going to be a fruitful weekend.

Hope to have some cool pics and new finds.

Baycafe, we will definitely hook up, its a must-do!
