Anybody here into glass blowing?
    #4686654 - 09/20/05 03:55 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Is it fun? How much does it cost to get the equipment? Can you make money off of it?

What are the rules on making bowls nowadays (do you have to explicitly say "for tobacco only" for example)?

I think zippoz does glass blowing, you should talk to him.

I would imagine it's a really cool hobby though, plus the result can be enjoyed in many ways  :stoned:

I've been looking into getting some kind of apprenticeship...

I'm majoring in product design, it would be awesome if I could tie that into glassblowing and get my own shop with a setup in there where people could watch. That's my dream as of now.

I would take great appreciation in smoking some fine herbage out of a bowl I made myself. That'd be amazing.

Zippoz is into glass. My wife and I used to, but since we moved we haven't had access to the same quality studio we used to use. A good thread to search for might be "Epic Glassblowing" thread. Zippoz and I both have some pics of our stuff, I think others have posted pics, too.

It seems as if nobody has answered my main questions:

1. Can you make money off of it? Or do you have to be a super experienced expert artisan to make any money in the glass-blowing field?

2. Is it still legal to make and sell bowls? I know that the paraphenalia laws have stiffened up (Operation Pipe Dreams), but I still see bowls and hookahs being sold (usually with an explicit "This is for tobacco" sign next to it).

they are for soft glass, which is what your gonna get all your non-smokables out of, like a huge statue, or a big paperweight, or plates and such...

you would want to learn how to blow pipes and such from someone who actualy makes pipes. you would typicaly get an aprentiship (this is the way to do it properly) and pay that person like 3-10,000 to learn.. then, you would be doing all the bitch work for awhile, pulling points, color, etc.. and then you would be doing bitch work making a bunch of shitty pipes that they sell in the tobacco stores...

you can make money off it if your good, but it takes awhile, and you need to practice, and get skill... typicaly, once your good, you can make $1 a minute.

if you make a bunch of mass produced pipes and such, then they will sell for a lot less, and you would have to do the selling to local shops and such, unless you can find a distributor. Some shops wont buy directly from you.

legal--some places its legal, some it's not... it depends on how they want to be dicks about it... but you can only sell your stuff for tobacco use only, because once something is intended to be used to ingest marijuana, or other illigal substances, then it is parapharnelia.

the explicit "tobacco use only" has always been in play, it's just more popular to say it, hence, by saying it, it's not drug parapharnellia.

maybe after a year you can make some money at it, but it takes time and effort... as much time and effort you put in is what you'll get out.. it helps if you can seperate your every day life with your glass blowing expensises. say set aside X amount, and use that to do your setup and learning, then keep that seperated so that you can track how much your actualy spending, or making.

wow i cant believe i missed this post.

okay yes you can make money on it. a decent amount of money if you sell all of your work yourself... shops (depending on where you are) will give you $5-12 a piece depending on how good it is, if you are a good salesman you can sell those pieces for 15-30. i sell every piece of glass i make myself, i could sell to shops.... but i think that what they offer for pieces is outrageous.

getting started cost me about $750 i got everyhitng i needed, (torch tools, ventilation) but not a kiln... and i havent upgraded equipment yet. i would recomend getting a kiln... that being said once you get the equipment it will probably take you a year to get good at it, it did for me.

a kiln is somewhat important acording to some. you see when you make a pipe it is impossible to jkeep it all one temperature while making it. since glass expands at differnt temperatures if one part is hotter and more expanded than another it will crack. even if it dosent crack it will have microscopic cracks in it known as stress, this will make your pipes ~30% weaker than a pipe that has been cycled through a kiln.

cycling is where you take your finished pieces and put them in a kiln, bring them up to about a thousand degrees and cool them again, it removes the stress. some say it is wrong to sell a pipe that has not been run through a kiln, personally i have never run pipes thorough a kiln. i have seen my pipes hit the ground and bounce many times, this includes realllly thick and thin pipes of all types. such as this one! http://www.shroomery.org/forums/files/05-29/206273791-pipe.jpg [/image]

Zippoz- I hear ya on the kiln thing. My main thing is glass beads, and they never get bigger than say thumb size, but I have never used a kiln and have had no problems. Made like a thousand beads and maybe 4 or 5 have broken. Ditto with the bouncing off the ground thing. Of course, all the professional bead makers say you must have a kiln, but I flame anneal them and guarantee them, so no problems.
Randall - The equipment is quite expensive, and it takes lots and lots of torch hours to get good enough to make quality pieces. Of course, if you are good and sell your own shit, then it's high dollar city. Custom pieces, etc. But that's long term. Short term- it's a real fun hobby and I find a certain relaxing state when blowing.
Also Cheech went to jail for selling tobacco pipes. Damn shame...

look into glass repair, there's a lot of things that people want fices ranging
from labware, pipes/bongs to dinnerware, it can be pretty lucrative if you do a
little marketing, for glass blowing in general you need to look into equipment
you'll need in order to make good quality, durable products, look into an
annealing oven thats capable of tempering as well, your work wont last long
if you cant anneal it, temering it will produce an even stronger piece, virtualy
unbreakable
