Outdoor beds/winter
    #4687359 - 09/20/05 08:57 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I live in the upper midwest, and fall is fast approaching. My outside bed is primarily for my contammed cakes. I have harvested a few, but a few is better than nothing. I am wondering if the cakes/myc/spores that I put out there will be able to survive the winter? Should I mulch the top to give it some protection from a little of the cold? Has anyone had any luck with this type of situation?

If its cubes and if it freezes your doomed. If it doesn't you have a small chance. If it doesn't drop below 45, you have a decent chance. Dependent on the strain and the original conditions if it isn't a lab creation. You could dig and bag and place in a cool place and hope for dormancy. But your best bet is to start planning your bed for next year and saving those spent casings / cakes at around 46 - 50 degrees. Good luck.
