Green Mold PLZ help!!
    #4686477 - 09/20/05 03:03 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Ok so i found green mold growing on one of my jars about 5 days ago and i kept it just to see what would happen. Well today i looked at it again and the mold of course had grown. So took the cake out and put it in a nice spot for mushies to grow. Will this help any? I don't think it will but I've heard people saying to put cakes and jars outside because mother natur might take care of it. I didn't think about taking a pic so i don't have one. Please help!!

throw it out.
you dont want to eat any shrooms that grow off a green mold infected cake.

If you moved it outside, chances are it will recover just fine. And for the record, green molds are not toxic to humans. No harm will come to you from eating mushrooms from a substrate with trichoderma.

Aspergillus flavus is a greenish mold that produces aflatoxins, which, as is implied by their name, are toxic.

Aflatoxins are not a byproduct of mushroom cultivation. Secondly, nobody is suggesting to eat the mold itself, just making the point that a mushroom picked from a substrate with any of the green molds that are common to mushroom production is safe to eat. Toxins, with the exception of heavy metals are not taken up from the substrate into the fruitbody.

The Flavus strain of Aspergillus is more of a yellow color. Trichoderma is one of the most widespread molds in our enviroment. Such as, we inhale hundreds or even thousands of Trich spores daily throughout the warmer months and the humans body has adapted to this.

In other words, Trich spores attached to a fruitbody that get ingested will not harm you...
