how thick should the top casing layer be?
    #4685906 - 09/20/05 01:54 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Ive seen people just sprinkle it on and some other teks say to use 1:4 ratio. dose this mean the top layer needs to be 4xs as thick as the mecylin layer? i did just just a very thin layer on my SA and its already growing thru after just 3 days. its maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick.

lol, search maaaan

1/4 the depth of the substrate.  its 4 inches deep, do it 1" or less.  lots of people do 1/8th the depth.

I recommend 3/8"-5/8" no matter what depth substrate you use.

i go with 3/4 of an inch, you can also consider having deeper and shallower areas in your casing layer

Why would you want deeper and shallower areas in the same casing layer ? That would make it very uneven.

Exactly! That would make no mycosense at all and undermine a prolific pinset.

not to sound like something straight from Stamets, but by shaping the casing layer you can control fruitings better, and maximize the yield of later flushes, instead of just going for broke on the first flush

The thing you fail to realize is you create more than your first flush with your initial pinset. Go back and read somemore  Also welcome bro!
