question about casing and peroxide
    #4685752 - 09/20/05 12:45 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

ok, so i did some casing and some of the casing teks say to use 10% peroxide and water and spray the first layer of dry verm with it. well when i did that and layed the casing on top of it.. i could hear fizzing. is that normal? cause i think the peroxide is killing the cake layer of the casing. and just a rule of thumb, how thick should the top casing layer be.

holy shit! you screwed up its not 10% of peroxide in the water, thats way too much peroxide. Your supposed to use like a teaspoon per a gallon or just use distilled water. Thats going to cause contamination since you are killing the myc.

Yes, I hate this lack of clarity on the peroxide thing. People meant a 10% solution of 3% h2o2, in effect a 0.3% solution, your was 33 times too strong.

Same goes for bleach, people mention 10% solutions, really meaning 0.5-0.6% solutions (i.e. standard bleach is usually 5-6%, h202 is usually 3% sometimes 6% and then 25% for dying.)

I would dunk the entire thing in sterile water. Diluting the H2O2 and drain it off.

los freddy. right you dont need the peroxide. i also think that your casing will come out fine. when i dunked mycelium in pure h2o2, the fizzing sounded as well (which i think is just the peroxide oxidating). the grain recovered and spead onto agar soon after.

so, the peroxide may stall your grow but i'm sure it won't kill anything. and you probably used 3%peroxide in a 1/9 parts mixture with water.

Peroxide will help with ungerminated contam spores, it will stall myc a bit. If you dunk that casing it will dilute it further, the residual h2o2 should be enough for the contams, I would not add more to that casing.
