in all the shroom guides iv read, they all say to use jars that taper outwards, and give a couple of products that use these jars. the problem is, i live in the uk and cannot find any such jars, or any other suitable containers. any help will be appreciated.

Was Bonne Manam jars one of the products? If so I found them quite easily in Morrisons. Tesco stock them as well I believe. Hope it helps

If you are doing the PF tek just use any normal drinking glasses that dont have the 'shoulder' with a dry verm layer and aluminium foil; if you are doing a grain tek then it doesnt matter if the jar has a shoulder - you can just spoon the colonised grain out to spawn/case.

Hi there, I'm a newbie from UK (excellent forum!)
Slightly off the topic of jars (sorry, but for all my searching I hav'nt a scoobie doo where you can get hold of Hydrogen Peroxide. I know it is the main ingredient in hair bleaching products etc but cannot see it in Boots or similar shops. Also, when people advise to dunk in 10 parts water to 1 part H2O2, is this 1 part of H2o2 at the 3% concentration (I have seen this concetration advised alot as well)
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

You can get 3% H202 from various places on the web, although it'll cost you: http://www.detoxyourworld.com/acatalog/h2o2.html http://www.naturalwayhealth.co.uk/easygreen-sprouter.shtml
stronger stuff is pretty much hair dresser supply store only - look for sally's, if there is one, and see if they'll let you buy some (sometimes that sort of shop is funny about selling strong peroxide solutions to random folk.
A last resort would be asking any friends or family who happen to be hair dressers to buy a bottle for you. It's normally available at 9 and 12%

Or simply use bleach for your sterilising techniques - 1:200 bleach/water works, and is a lot easier to find. I have never used H2O2 and have never had a problem. Also find an antibacterial spray that contains a high percentage of ethanol in the cleaning isle of Tesco's for spraying down your benches etc. Just be sensible about sterility and you shouldnt have a problem.
Good luck.

H2O2 is in most chemists it is a disinfectant. You can use methylated spirit for cleansing, the red/purple stuff

Thanks for this info (its for a friend). I'm thinking about H2O2 for the vermiculite layer when my friend births the cake tomorrow, and for misting, rather than a general area/ work surface disinfectant. Also, I have heard it should be at 3% concentration, Does this mean the 3% solution of H2O2 is then diluted into 1 part to 10 parts water? If so, he has spotted some mouthwash in Sainsburys which contains 1.5% peroxide. Could my friend dilute 1 part of this with 5 parts of water to give the same overall concentration, and is there a danger that other substances within the mouthwash solution could be detrimental?
Thanks everyone! Much appreciated!

I bought some 6% hydrogen peroxide last week from our local tesco, it was behind the counter at the pharmacy section. Unfortunately it also contains phosphoric acid and phenacetin, so i dont use it to dunk my cakes i just use it to keep the water in my air bubbler sterile and oxygenated.
