they should get enough oxygen while one tries to keep the risk off contamination as low as possible

if you're using PF tek leave the tape on the jars until they are at least 50% colonized then take it off to allow air exchange.

i never did PF tek so somebody tell me if i'm wrong here.

take the tape off right when inoculation and keep it off.

The dry verm layer is enough to keep contams out. Air tight jars will not allow for gas exchange, slowing colonization.

^^^ exactly, the more Gas exchange the better. The Verm should be enough, but, I put 5 layers of coffee filter paper on top with a rubber band, just to be safe.

btw i am using a 2cm layer of polyfill instead of verm, but u have to be sure that the polyfill isnt to "fluffy" because it wont help much then...

and in addition i have three holes 5mm in diameter in the lid, these holes are stuffed with polyfill.
these holes are for inoculation and for a better gas exchange

greets

just leave the lids loose, you dont need coffee filters too, thats what the verm layer is for.
