There were hard times ahead for the people of planet Ventura,
Staring into the networks of space and time,
Their eyes were open,
But still, they were blind,
I wandered through the weird and lurid landscape of another planet

If you are just using the standard PF tek- verm/BRF/water, then you need to follow the recipe to a "T". If your substrate is too wet, you didn't do it correctly. For every jar/glass, you should have a 2:1:1 ratio of verm:BRF:water. If you are using a 1/4 cup of BRF, you would use a 1/2 cup of verm and 1/4 cup of water. For twelve jars you would use 6 cups of verm, 3 cups BRF and 3 cups water. See a pattern? If you follow that ratio, you will have no problems. You can always dunk the cakes once they are 100% colonized to bring the moisture back up later. Also, if you don't have a PC, make sure you are boiling your jars for AT LEAST an hour. The more you handle the jars/glasses, the more you are giving contams a chance to take hold. Inoculate and leave them alone for a week before you even look at them. I know it's hard to not look every hour at them, but it will be much more rewarding when you see REAL change in the jars.
