They are saying on the live BBC News that British forces have stormed an Iraqi jail to get back these men. Looks very bad indeed for the state of Iraqi/British relations. This could get messy.

The MoD is now saying that they did not storm the prison, their tank knocked the prison wall down by accident, and that they had agreement with the Iraqi police over the servicemen. Be interesting to see how the info on this pans out, but it sounds to me like they were getting their men out before the prison was stormed by rather ugly mob that had gathered outside. They were chucking fire bombs at the tank which was trying to get out without squashing anyone.

I'm so proud of our troops in Iraq.

The real headline for this story should read:
Iraqi Police Hand British Soldiers to Enemy

The Iraqi national government told the locals to hand these two British soldiers over to the Brits. When they got to the jail, they learned that the soldiers had been handed over to the insurgents. The storming of the jail is inconsequential in comparison.

Between this and learning that about $1,000,000,000.00 has been stolen from funds intended to re-equip the Iraqi army, it's clear that the Iraqi government, military, and police forces have been severely infiltrated.

To say that this is "bad for the state of Iraqi/British relations", while true, insinuates moral equivalence where there is none. It's like saying, "the Holocaust was bad for Jew/German relations."

Here's another article that examines the implications of the story:
