    #4682229 - 09/19/05 03:56 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

I got this cat litter, made out of silica gel. Will this work the same as a desiccant??

thanks.

It's worth a shot, but make sure you don't let the shrooms and the litter touch each other.

Ofcourse. It says it asorbs order and wetness, so I hope it will work. Would it be better to bust it up into smaller chunks, right now its like pencil erraser size chunks...

Keep us posted on that. I live in an area where it is very difficult to get a hold of desiccant and I'd like to know of more common alternatives (that work)...

OK, will do. I have not air dried because I dont have a fan setup at the moment. Would it be better to let them sit out and then into the catshit box, or stright into the catshit chamber?

You can dry them a few ways. I use a dehydrator, works REAL good. You can let them sit out on a rack or a paper towel for a few days, but desiccant is what gets the shrooms real dry. If you are having trouble finding desiccant, go to Walmart, Kmart or a similar store and look for Damp Rid. It it used to decrease humidity in a small room or closet. Don't be shy to ask for it, I doubt anyone will know what you are going to use it for   You can also get desiccant from a pharmacy for free. It comes in little packets in their medicine vials and they throw hundreds out every month. Ask the pharmacist or any employee there for some. If they want to know why, tell them you make  your own beef jerky and you use the packets to keep it fresh :smirk:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silica_gel

Its high porosity, around 800 m?/g, allows it to adsorb water readily, making it useful as a desiccant (drying agent). It can reduce the relative humidity in a closed space to around 40%. Once saturated with water, the gel can be regenerated (dried) by heating it to 150?C (300?F) for 1.5 hours per liter (about 1 dry quart measure or about 30oz weight) in a thick-walled Pyrex dish. Silica gel is non-toxic, non-flammable and chemically unreactive.

However, some of the beads may be doped with a moisture indicator, such as cobalt (II) chloride, a chemical that is known to cause cancer and changes color when moist. Cobalt (II) chloride is deep blue when dry and pink when moist. Another common indicator in use becomes yellow when moist. While non-doped silica gel is non-toxic, the chemicals used to dope it can be toxic and are the reason most silica gel is labeled as dangerous or poisonous when eaten. Silica dust can cause Silicosis. A chemically similar substance with far greater porosity is aerogel.

we use this stuff in the lab

greets

I don't know. I'm new to this like you.
From what I've read I would say that you should fan them and then put them in a box with cat litter in it. Check this out: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23384
That's how I'm thinking.

i use cat litter silica. its fine. but you'll need to fan too. or get a dehydrator, which is the best way.
