Excel and Pivot Tables
    #4681976 - 09/19/05 03:04 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Anybody have any experience in this arena?
I want to arrange my data a certain way and I feel I'm close but I just can't get it to read my mind.

The idea is to have a master list like the one depicted that has entries for ~100 suites. Then, using that data, I want to generate a similar looking list that only displays the items assigned to a specific responsible party per suite.
Any suggestions?

I'll play with it a lil bit and see what I can come up with... it'll be later today though.

my frontend to our SQL DB is Prolog running on a solitary Win2k Citrix server that is overloaded with users.

i managed to do it some time later...

unmerge the Suite# cells and fill the empty cells with repeating corresponding #s
Data -> Pivot Table
Select your dataset
create the new Pivot Table in a new worksheet
Once in Pivot view drag the 3 categories onto the Table
Here i just experimented with positioning the different categories on different areas of the Table. this is the part it took me forever to figure out how to do. i killed a bunch of time creating the table only to delete it to change the creation order to note how the different orientations affected the display. once i figured out that i could drag the categories around and watch the changes in "real time" i had it looking the way i wanted rather quickly. a few adjustments to the Table Options turned off the tally #s i didn't need. i'd post a pic but i'm on a linux laptop and the document doesn't display quite the same in OOo.

i've continued messing with Pivot Tables and have decided they are a damn cool way to manipulate .xls data.
