Clumps in my poo?
    #4681782 - 09/19/05 02:14 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Hey. AFOAF read that he wants his poo clumpy and fluffy. Another FOAF read that he wanted to mash those clumps up before pasteurization. Which FOAF is right?

Clumpy/fluffy/vermy/airy, or soupy/fibery/vermy

Thanks

you want to break those clumps up, regardless of if you do it before or after pasturization. i prefer before. make a nice clumpless, light and fluffy mix with the right amount of water, just a drop or two when lightly squeezed in your hand.

it is it is oh so tasty. just fill a bowl and pour some milk over, maybe a little sugar to liking. eat away, mmmm. lol

the more even of a texture you achieve the better off you will be when it comes to colonizing evenly and quickly.

makes sense....FOAF breaks straw-filled-clumps to straw-mixed-poweder, then adding verm. After that his cat throws it in a pillow case, drops it in a turkey roaster for two hours and ties it to a fence overnight. In the morning, the cat dumps it into a bin and breaks up the slightly compressed mix. It falls apart into a really light and fluffy straw/verm/poop mixture, and decent pressure put into a paw-squeez relents two drops of water. The cat acts like it couldn't get better, but FOAF just wanted to make sure.

He says thanks.

Fluffy and airy would not be clumpy. The clumps are compacted..you break them all up, theres more airspace in it, better colonization.

How I do grain (old still good tips)
Turn your closet into a fruiting chamber
Casing layer colonization and overlay

if you have clumps the mycelium cant get inside and colonize it. Therefore you dont want clumps for better colonization.

If you get clumps of tight poo in your poo substrate, the myc won't colonize it like the other portions of the substrate.  So, say, one of these uncolonized chunks is sitting near the top of your substrate, and you pick your first flush, this can expose uncolonized poo substrate to contams.  Green is teh no funn.   Oh--that's for the original poster.

the clumps will colonize just not as quickly as the nice loose fluffy stuff. as for contams, i would hope that the clumps would have colonized by the time the first flush was done.
so no i wouldn't worry about that, just pick em and patch it.

Sorry--I'm speaking from experience with bagged composted manure.   I have seen the woeful waste that is a poo casing gone green.  :smirk:
