Digital thermometer
    #4681163 - 09/19/05 08:29 AM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Got one of those digital thermos.....have my spawn bags at 87.1 degrees right know(got a pretty cool/cheap setup...a plastic sterlite container...over a heat pad with the digital thermo resting inside though a hole I burned on the outside.Whats cool is that I am able to monitor the temperature without ever exposing my bags to light, since the thermo's display is on the outside)My question is...since I can monitor my temp to the tenth of a degree, could I boost it to a higher temp? Like I know that 86 degrees is recommended...what about 88.3F and so on....any benefit to speed up colonization?

Wow man waaaayyyyy to hot allready, max temp for incubation is 84 degrees, and that is not recommended try lowering temp to 81 degrees.

Well according to spores101, the Brazilian strain is incubated at 30 Celsius = 86 F, so 87.1 is way to high? ( thats the spawn in the bag)

Does a one to two degree change really effect colonization speed

Well anything too hot will kill of mycellium and too low will stall growth so has to be perfect.

I thought a good range was 82-86f

Yes, there's a formula for it somewhere, I forget exactly.
Growth rate doubles or halves for every 10 degrees C, I think it is.

But spawn bags, I'd turn that down to 80F, max.

If you're colonizing spawn bags, keep the temperature to 75F/24C or below.  I've seen them produce ten to fifteen degrees of heat on their own.  Any substrate temp above 83F/28C slows down colonization.

Yeah, I believe it- I have had 6 quart tubs heat up so bad while colonizing I had to take them out and let them cool down.
I use a styrofoam cooler, but no heater other than the tubs themselves. I've seen the temp jump up dramatically.
