Casing layer not colonizing
    #4679689 - 09/19/05 12:10 AM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Hi there, this is my first attempt at using dung/straw (5+ pounds). On 9/1, I spawned using ground-up PF cakes. By 9/13, the casing looked colonized:

(It had looked basically like this for 2-3 days, so I wasn't too concerned with casing prematurely.)

On 9/13, I added a casing layer (50/50+), which was perhaps just a little thicker than enough to cover all of the mycelium. (I can post a pic of that tomorrow, if necessary.)

It's now been 5 days since I added the casing layer, and virtually nothing is happening. Any ideas as to why this might be? I've got things at room temperature, and I know the strain I'm using is good.

ok so the 50/50+, hows the water content of the casing mix? it wasn't too wet when you applied it?
how much buffer (lime, calcium carb, crushed oyster shell) did you add to the 50/50 mix?
yes please do post a pic of it if you can, a visual can sometimes help with deciphering a problem.
:peace:

no offense, but that pic looks like a mess. Oatmeal at a school cafe. There's no room, nothing it's hard to see or say. maybe its the pick, but it looks like all the moist. on the sides is running down to you casing, which can't be good.

OK, here's a pic:

back - I used 7.75 cups vermiculite, 7.75 cups peat moss, 2.25 cups crushed oyster shells, .6 cups calcium carbonate, and 7.75 cups water. I should have used 7.5 or a little less cups of water, but I accidentally screwed that up. I drained as much of the water as I could, so that it wasn't pooling. (Minus the water), this is the same mixture I always use for casings, and it's been fine. It was a little wetter than normal though.

will - I used enough casing mix to cover all of the mycelium, or possibly a little bit more than that. I'll guesstimate 1/2" give or take. The substrate depth is about 3 to 3 1/2".

atom - There is no water running into the casing/substrate. Also, there was a small amount of moisture on the mycelium (raining down from the top) when I cased. But not enough to red-flag it.

i would try decreasing the humidity some by giving it more FAE. the myc is coming along or you have some whispy cobweb on the right side. i cant really tell though.
best of luck
