Bacteriostatic Water for Spore Syringes? Will It Kill The Spores?

i was wondering if you could use bacteriostatic water (sterile water plus 0.9% benzyl alcohol) to make spore syringes. i'm not exactly sure what bacteriostatic water is , but it sounds like its meant to fight off bacteria or the alcohol could be used for meds that require alcohol to be absorbed. kinda like how NyQuil has 10% alcohol cuz some of its ingredients arent water soluble but alcohol soluble instead. either way i know the alcohol content would help atleast a lil in making syringes more sterile, but would it hurt the spores?

use aqua dest w 0.9% NaCl and u will be fine, since there is nothing wich organisms(algae could but..just keep it dark) could use as substrate..

Distilled water is the correct medium for spore syringes. RR

i know distilled or medical sterile water is the normal medium for spore syringes, i was just looking for a way to make them more contam resistant. most the syringes i make are sterile, cept sometimes they get contam'ed during the innoc. and if i forget to alcohol wipe it after every jar then i end up with 2-4 contam'ed jars. anyways i was hoping their was some type of antibiotic or something that would make the immediate inoculation point a lil more resistant to molds cuz i always get cobweb mold right at the point of innoc. in about 1/5 of my jars.

You should sterilize the needle between jars. Alcohol is only a sanitizer, not a sterilizer. You need to flame the needle red hot to sterilize it. Also, build the syringe in a glove box or better yet in front of a flow hood. You don't want the air that's in the syringe to be unflitered, or it's likely to have bacteria or molds. RR

thanks RR i've decided to make a glovebox, a simple one out of a clear rubbermaid tub and some yellow dishwashing gloves. cut the holes and rubber cement the gloves thru the holes. this will probably help my contam problems.

Bacteriostatic means that it will only keep the bacteria from growing. At the very least you would want something that is bacteriocidal which isn't necessarily going to do anything about molds...
