In the stomach psilocybin is converted to psilocin. So actually you always trip due to the psilocin, or a motabolite of it.

The difference in potency of psilocin and psilocybin is due to the different molecular weight, psilocybin having a higher one. I think the ratio of the molecular weight is about 1.4, this being also the ratio in the potency, as Hofmann and many other found. This means you have to take 1.4 times more psilocybin to have the same effect.

What Elektrolurch said. Psilocybin is a more stable molecule, where as psilocin isn't as stable.

the stomach acid is supposed to destroy a lot of the chemical content and potency right? what if you took some Zantac an hour before dosing, Zantac is supposed to shut off some of the pores that emit the acid, would this help your body get to more of the psilocin before it gets burnt off?

Actually the bulk of the potency is lost due to Mono-amine oxidase's (correct me if I'm wrong) or MAO's. Stomach acid is just a concentration of mostly hydrochloric acid, which just converts it all to a salt form that can be absorbed later on in digestive tract. Taking zantac may actually elongate the coming up time, and make for a less dramatic peak, by possibly slowing the rate of absorption.

Yeap, it's not the acid in the stomach, it's the MAO in the thin intestine which decomposes much of the psilocin. That is why taking a MAO inhibitor potentiates a trip, but also why DMT isn't orally active unless you take a MAO inhibitor ;)
