health food store or oriental/asian markets sell agar-agar. thats what you want agar-agar.
here is what it is: Agar-agar,  gelatin-like product made primarily from the algae Gelidium and Gracilaria (red seaweeds). Best known as a solidifying component of bacteriological culture media, it is used also in canning meat, fish, and poultry; in cosmetics, medicines, and dentistry; as a clarifying agent in brewing and wine making; as a thickening agent in ice cream, pastries, desserts, and salad dressings; ?

There's a number of Agar recipes in the Cultivation Guides found here...

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23544

Just read through a few and they'll give you an excellent idea of what you need and how to do it. Good luck with your grow!

:smirk:

you can't make it...you can buy it!~

Asian grocery stores are ok...
but I like better quality agar for working with cultures.

Interesting idea...How WOULD pectin work as an agar substitute? I've been told that gelatin was a poor substitute but it has never really been explained why. So, what about pectin as a possible agar substitute?
