Morning Glory Cultivation Qs
    #4677446 - 09/18/05 01:45 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

So over the summer I grew a ton of morning glories in an attempt at crossbreeding..... I'm now harvesting all of the seeds and wondering if there is a period of dormancy required before I can plant them? Also, does anyone have any information on a critical day length to induce flowering in morning glories? I'd like to see the results of my crossbreeds before these plants get out of control.

they come from the seed pods, i believe ipomoea violacea only sets seeds once a year. Or at least that has been my observation.

If you look at this pictue: http://www.erowid.org/plants/show_image.php?i=morning_glory/ipomoea_violacea8.jpg
The round structure just below the left most flower is a seed pod. There's another directly to it's left. Each of these pods has 1-4 seeds in it.

Morning Glory seeds do not require a dormancy period. I've grown them less than a week after harvesting them from a plant. Generally morning glory vines start flowering before they're too large, and I don't think flowering is dependent of photoperiod.

I find that growing morning glorys is pointless. They grow wild up the corn stalks on the edge of corn feilds. I find that these wild seeds are 3x potent as ones from online vendors.

If all you want is seed to eat, harvest wild ones. If you wanna grow it to accent your ethno garden I guess thats cool.

those arent seed pods, they are flower buds just developing.
the pods are a big round ball, slightly larger then a marble.
seeds will sprout readily with no dormancy whatsoever.
here in holland they grow as an annual and flower prettymuch the whole summer and then dies off.

look for the bottem part of the plant.
basicly its like this: the lowest pods will ripen as the plant is still flowering above there.
the pods only start to develop when the flowering has moved on to a
ways above that point.

or maybe ure just to early.
after the flower it does take a wile for the pod to swell up.
anyways im pretty sure u wouldent see a pod without noticing it,
here pretty recognisable...

Thanks for the info everyone.... this in an experiment for asthetic purposes not hallucinogenic ones so wild harvesting wouldn't do me any good.....
ShroomieofDoomie.... here is a link to another post which shows the seed pods!! http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1874658/an/0/page/4
