Tyvek Users help plz. . .
    #4674899 - 09/17/05 05:53 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Well my rye jars have been incubating about 14 days now, and theyve all got white fuzzy mycellium on them, but I can still tell it's made out of rye grains. . I can somehwat see the grains even if they all do have mycellium on them. They've been like this for about 4 days without change. Anyway what I'm wondering is . . does it matter what side of the tyveck is up? I have the writing on the inside. . I dont know of it's one way stuff or if it's to keep moisture on the outside out but allow gas exchange both ways??? Anyone with real life experience help plz.

I'm in the same situation as you. I think what you mean to ask is if your jars are done or not, or if it's stopped colonizing.

So that's the official answer. . .I think I"ll wait another few days and if not I'll take some pictures and post to see what the experienced folks say. Sounds like it doesn't matter which direction, all the tecks that use tyvek never have any printing on the outside so I put it on the inside. . I guess we'll see, thanks for the info guys.

How much exposed tyvek surface area do you have per jar?

The entire lid?

Tyvek has a tendency to over-aerate the jars, causing them to dry out much more quickly thanpolyfil.

Good question, baby hitler.

Agar, Magash, do you guys use just the lid ring, and a piece of tyvek, or do you poke a hole in the metal lid and place tyvek over/under?

I usually use tyvek and rings only with a big piece of tape on it.

My results vary. I suspect that Tyvek breaks down if it gets too hot and loses it's biological barrier properties.

Anything over 15psi is too much for Tyvek IME.

I have used just a Tyvek filter in place of the metal lid on my BRF/verm half pint jars. I also got rid of the dry verm layer. I filled the jars up to within 1/2-3/4" of the top and inoculated in a glove box. They are colonizing like wildfire right now with no signs of contams yet.

Guatemala 6 days after inoculation w/approx 1cc MSI incubating in a TiT at 85F:

I think the air exchange is so good with just the Tyvek on that it will colonize long before it has a chance to dry out.

I did and it did. See pictures that I previously posted. The jars were cooked with foil over them. The Tyvek allows steam to escape, so there is no chance for explosion. I PC'd at 15psi for 45min. Tyvek held up great.
