Is this San Pedro (mescaline)?
    #4676028 - 09/17/05 11:40 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

There is a big cactus growing down the street from me and I do not know if it is San Pedro. I've seen many cuttings from this (old scars on the cactus) so someone's taking bits. I want to be sure before I do anything with it.

Note: this is only a picture that I found online which looks identical to the one in my neighborhood. It currently has large white flowers on it, just like in this picture

That looks like a San Pedro to me. The most obvious feature of the San Pedro is that it has almost non-existent spikes on it.

I did some more research and it seems like it may be a species of Peruvian Apple Cactus, which contains no mescaline. This one has pretty non-existant needles on it and I do recall this particular one producing large red fruits on them (not sure what time of the year it was).

From what I see of it the ridges seem a bit deep and there may be too few of them. The ones that I've seen had shallow ridges and between 6 and 8 ridges total. Here are some pictures of actual flowering pedros.

I am not an expert at identifying cacti (hell I thought 2 of my myrtillocactus geometrizans were pedros). Your best bet is to take a bunch of photos of this cactus and post them here. As a member you can upload photos into your directory.

Then luckily a true cactus expert will tell you for sure... but to be honest this is in the wrong forum I think (should be in enthobotanical garden).

make sure it's not a cereus (inactive) instead of a trichocereus (active inc. pedros). You will probably get more help in the forum "Ethnobotanical Garden"
