I'm not a mycologist, so perhaps I'm wrong about the mold in this photo, but it looks like Aspergillus is having a feast in NOLA (this was taken today). There must be tons of the stuff:

This stuff is popping up above the waterline from the flood. And everything below the waterline is coated in a nasty slime of fuel, chemicals, dead people and trash. Odds are pretty good that every structure with even four feet of flooding is a total loss.

Wow, that looks like what happened to all the stuff we had in our basement when it was flooded.
Stuff smells so bad, and it takes a shitload of money to clean it up.

I would imagine if the house is to be saved, the sheetrock will have to be ripped off the walls and replaced. Also, all the wiring and insulation. RR

I'm an insurance adjuster and look at this stuff all the time. Mold remediation is very expensive and will likely exceed this person's policy limitation. Most policies exclude mold or have a limitation between $5,000-$10,000.
In this case, everything will be lost. You can clearly see the water line up 3-4 feet up the walls. That home will be a total loss. The foundation will probably be the only survivor.

When I was 16 years old a sewage pipe burst in my basement, flooding it with shitwater. The whole basement became covered with black mold. It was the most foul disgusting mess you can imagine. The really bad part is my mom forced my little brother and I pull up the carpet because we had to sell were in the process of selling the house and that became a contractual arrangement of the sale. Using the full weight of our body, we spent a full day rolling up the carpet into one huge, HEAVY roll. We then had to saw the roll into little pieces using rudimentary handsaws. The feeling of my whole body being immersed in that moldy, smelly, shitwater carpet was by far the most disgusting experience of my life thus far. It's only after reading about black mold on this forum that I realize that its really dangerous. I feel for those people...
