Incubator questions
    #4674266 - 09/17/05 04:06 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

What else could I use to heat my makeshift incubator? I was using a heating pad on low before, which gave temps of ~88*F. The box it heated was about 1'x1.5'x5".. If i used the heating pad and put it in a bigger box, could that lower temps a bit (i know temps will be more stable regardless)?

Ambient temps are around *78-82 during the day, 68-72* at night.

Does anyone have any other heating suggestions? I'm trying to work with what I;ve got around the house so I dont have to spend more cash, so I'd like to try not to use a fishtank heater. I also would like to inoculate tomorrow, so I really dont have time to order a heater.

Again, Thanks, and sorry for being ignorant

Fishtank heaters can go for as low as five bucks.

Heating pads aren't always the best idea. Temps can sometimes fluctuate a lot causing slow colonization.

If you want to use what is around your house and not spend anymore cash, Your best option is to take your box you are incubating in, and put it on top of your refrigerator. That is the best method of getting good colonization time w/out spending more money. Your refrigerator will generate enough heat to keep them nice and warm.

Surely if you are using a thermostat with the heatmat there will be no problems though? Maybye a degree or so difference every now and again but that shouldn't be a problem.

Heating pads aren't the best route like srgtm1a said. Your air temp might be 88 but the bottom of your incubator is going to be a hell of a lot hotter which is going to slow down your colonization.

Surely not, It has a lot to do with surrounding air. While the bottom and the pad itself may stay constant, the surrounding air will fluctuate depending on the room temp itself.

IMO heating pads suck. Either the temp isn't constant, or they get so warm they dry out the jars.
