This morning I prepared 10 PF jars with brown rice flour and verm. All went perfect until I boiled my jars. Some of my lids on my pots allowed steam to escape. I put about 2 inches of water in the pots and then left to do some picking in my yard. I came back about 25 minutes later to find the whole house stinking like something was burning. I looked in my pots and the water had run dry. I have towels in the bottom of the pots. I quickly added a bunch of bottled water to each and now they're re-boiling as we speak.
Are my jars OK or not? What should I do?

i dunno, when in doubt start over. Making new jars doesnt take more then an hr and half or so. Better to lose a few hours then a few weeks.

I have done this before and it was followed by a failure with my jars. Just to be safe I would redo them, like coda said. I can't be for sure that the mistake was the direct cause of the failure, but it was probably a contributing factor.

Well.. my jars aren't damaged. They just have a little bit of burnt towel stuck to the bottom of them :P
Ugh.. I'm at a loss. Trav- did your jars just not colonize or did they get contaminated?
I won't be able to redo this for at least another week.. so if there is any way to salvage this into a success.. I'm all ears. I've been waiting/planning this forever so I don't really want to wait another week just to innoc if I dont have to. But I don't really want to waste my one syringe on shitty jars either.
Any input would be greatly appreciated!

My jars simply did not go, no contams but no sign of myc. I would have thought it was due to a bad syringe used to inoculate but I used the very same syringe on another batch and they worked. If you have the supplies, I would go ahead and innoc these and if in a week they are not showing anything, you can redo them at that point. That's what I'd do.

as long as your substrate doesn't look too dried out...
or the substrate doesn't looked burnt on the bottom...
I'd use them.

Well, maybe I'll just use half of my syringe and save the rest in case it doesn't work. Thanks for all the quick input all!

Use 1/2 your syringe on them, them use some of your syringe to make 2 LC's. It's easy and the smart thing to do. Make two in case 1 doesn't make it.

yeah, redo is pretty foolproof, and not much trouble for only 10 jars. It's a lot easier to redo 10 jars than have to buy another syringe, wait for it to get to you etc.

Wasn't sure what he meant. I'd still make LC's. If he has to wait a week to re-do the jars, the LC's could be close to ready to use.

i did the same thing too while i was boilg 6 of em. i inoculated them on wed morning and my thai samui's super strains are already partially colonized. my glass had cracks in it though too, just internal cracks. anyways, we immediatly let it cool down and coated it in accrylic(since these cracks were too small but we coated it just to be safe) but on the other 6 that arent colonized, i did those right, and they havent colonized. Not on all though I've got some cqodorians & indian orrissas & mexicans, so they just colonize slower i assume.

If you guys are saying "redo" as in resterilize the jars, I agree. If not, I don't understand why he would have to redo them from scratch He had a towel at the bottom of the pot, so the jars themselves shouldn't be burnt. I don't see that he would have had alot of moisture loss in the jars either. If he just boils them again, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Only 2 of my jars turned out Ok I think. The others all had a substrate that was burned or turning brown on the bottom. I don't want to waste my syringe on those, but I will inoculate the two that look fine. I'll just have to wait until next weekend to do it I guess.

If that's the case, then a redo is definitely in order. You didn't mention the burnt substrate B4, so I just assumed that it was OK.
