Sterlizing with a saturated salt solution?
    #4671251 - 09/16/05 09:51 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Has anyone proposed using a saturated salt solution in a regular pot instead of a pressure cooker to raise the boiling temperature of the water used to sterlize jars? I have done the calculations, and a saturated solution of salts that are very cheap and easy to get will allow one to achieve higher boiling temperatures than even a pressure cooker at 15 psi.

The cost of the salts used are much less than the cost of even a cheap pressure cooker, and the salt solution can be re-used to some extent.

I just wanted to know if any of you think this is a good idea for those without a pressure cooker. The top two salts I have in mind are magnesium sulfate or calcium chloride.

Sounds like an interesting experement, just dont let any water get through the lids of jars, salt = death to mycelium.

CRAP!!!! [Re: votelp2008]

I just realized that since the water within the jar doesn't have any salt in it, the water in the jar will boil off quickly, just like if you open a pressure cooker before letting it cool down.

The dream is over.

Yes, and the steam which does most of the sterilizing anyway would always be at 212 degrees as it would leave the salt in solution.

Good idea though.

I thought up the genius idea once of using oil instead of water on the same principle that oil gets hotter than water. don't try that either. Get a pc....

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.
