Would it be possible to take the caps and make cakes from the spores on the caps?

You can't make a cake, but you can inoculate with spores. Make a spore print and scrape the spores onto the substrate. Sterility is a requirement.

i think iv seen a post where someone did try that. they said it worked, but took forever to colonize

Yeah worded it weird, I meant using the spores right off the cap instead of making a syringe. How would I get it to the substrate though?

I have done it although contam is an issue. Out of five jars only one got contam.

1. PC jar and syringe
2. Fill syringe with contam free water
3. Place jar, syringe and mushroom cap (in ziploc bag) in glove box.
4. Lysol the shit out of it.
5. 30mins or so later in glove box open jar and remove mush from bag.
6. using needle from syringe scrape a few gills into jar
7. fill jar with water from syringe and let sit for a while
8. suck up water in jar with syringe...DONE

results 1 jar contam out of 5 inoculated.

Yeah it could work but to put it simply why? Chances of contams = huge, time delay in colonazition = huge, waste of good time and added work = why?  :thumbup:

Waiting for the spores to hydrate and all that crap isn't worth it.  :wink:

well it can be done, sure, but like magash said, it is going to take forever for you to see growth, and that is if you don't get contamination first, which is most likely what's going to happen.

There is nothing illegal about ordering empty syringes, you have nothing to worry about.
