The difference one year in the ground makes.

Here's one growing seasons difference, planted in the ground.
Trichocereus Scopulicolis
 A year later, four pups.

Verious Pachanois...
 A year later...

If you want them to really grow. Put them in the ground.

Is this because they have more space to develop more extensive and deep rootsystems?

I'd guess so. I've never got anywhere near as good results in pots, even in very large pots.

That was my first thought...
Another thought would be microbial/mycelial associations that can happen in the soil. These sort of associations (even symbiosis) are pretty common in the plant-funghi/bacterial kingdom. I am quite of a believer than an "alive" soil is a good, nurturing soil.So the ground is actually thriving with those organisms...
I try increasing my soil's "alive" content by utilising many organic (in the the chemistry sense) nutrients that different lifeforms can thrive in.Also i think of implementing them with an "azotobacterium" slurry ,that i will make from plants that carry azotobacterium containing nodes on their roots (they are visible, like thick balls on the roots)
You are lucky you have such a big garden, unfortunatelly my garden cannot hold a candle to yours..

That bed they are in was just weeds for years, I turned it over to a depth of 18 inches and buried alot of the weeds for their organic value. I left it for a month then planted the cacti, I feed them fish emulsion and water them lots in hot weather.
This pachanoi was a 16 inch un-rooted cutting When I planted it last summer, it's now 32 inches. Bigger cuttings do much better in my experience. If you look half way down on the left/center rib you'll see a small scar, that was a caused by a snail that lunched on the very top new growth when it was first planted.

in the ground your roots will have less drastic temperature fluctuations then they would in a pot, that might have some effect on it...

That makes sense, they also stay moist more of the time, Pachanois especially don't mind wet feet in the growing season.
I've noticed also that Trichs like to spread their roots out laterally not deep, I guess they just can't do that in pots.

Wow! That is great, thanks for sharing! Now I'm sure some of my cuttings are going to go into the garden next year. Even though I will have to dig them up because of the frost, at least I will have more cactus to divide and plant the year after that (I'm thinking long-term ). Very cool before and after comparison. Also, since a see a child's swing in the background, it's a good thing those aren't Peruvianus or some other very spiny cacti. Accidents can happen.

yes the free space for the roots and the ground cooled temperature means they can establish very quickly. you are going to have quite a forest in a number of years hanky, especially with the aussie climate.

I've started planting my pachanoi's in the ground. Only two so far but most of the rest will end up there. I plan to construct some type of green house TeePee for the winter months.

The question:
What kind of climate do you live in? What winter/summer temps?
Those are some fantastic plants. If I had such weather conditions I'd not have a spot without cacti... I'd also probably be robbed blind by some kid.

I imagine that all aspects of outdoors in australia helped. More sunlight, more space for root growth, more fresh air.

It's just like growing weed.
Plants grown outside in the ground grow larger.
Even if you use a ten gallon pot outside the plant isn't going to grow as large as if it were in the ground.
Pretty weird, maybe they know they are limited some how, root hormones or something.

I live in the 8b zone winter low temps in the 15-20 F range Right at the very lowest trichocereus pachanoi/peruvianus can stand. http://www.usna.usda. gov/Hardzone/hzm-se1.html

pretty simple realy, the bigger the root system, the more nutes it can consume at once...
also, a plant is always sised in a certain ratio to the roots. for most plants its a 1:1, what they have above they have below. if like a tree could grow much bigger then its roots it would come in danger of uprooting itself because of the weight and wind resistance...
anyways i mentioned the temp fluctuations because i suspect that to be the cause of some trouble ive been having with prettymuch all of my hot/dry climate plants...

My point is that even if the roots of the plant don't touch the sides of the container the plant will not grow as large as if it were in the ground, even with excellent care.
