where to meet people...

so, I finished college a few years ago. While in school, I was always meeting new people - girls in particular. The class setting as well as all the parties seemed conducive to my style of meeting people. I need to engage in conversation to connect with others. Now that I am done with school, that resource is gone. I have trouble approaching strangers in bars - sometimes I have nothing to say without some sort of common ground or interest (i.e. class). Plus, all the loud music works against how I best meet people and connect (conversation). Not to mention, 99% of the time I am not so interested in bar flies.
This topic has been brought up in my circle of friends - where do post-college 20-somethings meet people?
Any ideas?
I guess work is the best place, but surely there must be somewhere else. You can only meet so many people at work, particularly when there are few new employees and all the same people.
I guess what I am trying to say is, I am having trouble meeting new people but really want to. It really is hard and I am not the only one having this problem.
I have considered online dating, but I just cant bring myself to it - I am a bit leery of women who have to advertise on the net. Anyone have success with this? I dont know anyone who has.

A team-sport is good for meeting new people. Find a nice team. You have to like a sport though...

Totally, I shop at the health food store cuz that's where the hot hippie chicks go. Even the cashiers are pierced hotties. I like music and girls who like music, so a concert is a good place. Arrive early and strike up conversations before the loud music starts.

Depending on your interests, I'd imagine that raves/concerts/festivals would be a great place to meet people.

Yeah i've been thinking about this since i stopped going to college. Really i'm not too sure, the funny thing is online is seemingly the best and worst place to meet people. You get to see what they're like a short little blurb so if it sounds nothing like you you can just go on. The only problem is so very many people who are extremely interesting don't even have a computer..
