Piri piri?
    #4667711 - 09/16/05 12:17 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Piri piri is of course, the bulbs of a cyperus sp. These in and of themselves are not psychoactive but the ergot fungus which lives in symbiosis with the cyperus bulbs is.

My question is this, exactly how toxic (if it actually is at all) is this particular ergot? We know that the type or ergot that grows on on grain (from which LSD is derived) is highly toxic.

From what I've read there were no reports of any toxicity of this fungi. I'm wondering if anyone is privy to information about this particularly obscure sacrament? If you are, please share!

Lets not forget that this is an ayahuasca admixture ingredient which, happens to be employed prior to P viridis in rituals as a training element to prepare would be consumers of aya for the "real thing", i.e., ayahuasca with it's traditional ingredients B. caapi and P. viridis.

If you know anything more about piri piri than I have stated, please comment!

Mmmmm... gangrene!

The fungus which infects it seems to be balansia cyperi, which is in the clavicipitaceae. Perhaps synonymous with claviceps cyperi, I haven't really done any reading yet.
But I have found mention of "severe ergotism" linked to this species. Still, it would perhaps be a good source of the fungus if you wanted to culture it and extract ergotamine. I have a cyperus sp. in my garden, I'll go and see what species it is....

I haven't read anything anywhere that stated that cyperus sp. piri piri is toxic. I'm just being cautious because if there is the potential for poisoning then I want to know...
