Mid-Atlantic mushroom ID
    #4664296 - 09/15/05 12:02 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Found several logs with these mushrooms growing on them. They look very similar to the oyster mushrooms I have grown on newspaper and coffee grounds. Any help IDing would be greatly appreciated.

* Habitat- Mid Atlantic region of the US. Found in shaded hardwood forest growing on dead logs. I think the trees might be tulip populars.
* Gills white in color and run almost to the base of the stem.
* Caps smooth, fleshy, tear fairly easily. Each measuring from 3"-8" across. Most growing in clusters in clusters with some growing solo.
* Spore print color is creamy white
* No noticeable bruising
* Scent pleasant, mild "mushroomy"
* Some of the specimens which have started to decay are turning a sulfur yellow color.

They look like Oysters to me. The white spore print is important and correct for those. I would avoid the ones that are turning that bright yellow, though.

Nice find!

Happy mushrooming!
