Rye Grains Germinated
    #4663847 - 09/15/05 07:10 AM (18 years, 6 months ago)

I soaked my rye grains for about 36 hours and noticed this morning that they have begun to germinate. Should I throw these out and start over or should they be ok?

I am assuming that the pressure cooker will kill any sprouts.

Thanks

Some would say toss them. I would say use them as would others. I have grown on wheat which had partially sprouted. Just rinse them well and PC. As long as there are not big 1/2" sprouts you should be fine.

Please post even if it goes wrong, people searching old posts can be warned. Many just shout about success and never follow up on some threads, leaving people to presume it failed.
All it should mean is that some of the starch in the grain has converted to sugar. This is how you make beer and malt extract that is commonly used for LC's. I have seen some studies where higher sugar content in malt agar lead to higher levels of actives. I have wondered if partial germination may actually be a benefit.

Update on the Rye Jars:

It has been about four days since I inoculated the jars.

So far they are growing nicely with no contams.

I may have learned a lesson about inoculation. I guess I didn't shake the syringe enough between injections (I did shake it well before starting).

One jar is about 40-50% done while the rest are some multiple smaller than that and the last jar having no sign of growth whatsoever. I'm guessing that jar was the last I injected and probably got mostly water. I may just do a grain transfer when the first jar finishes.

First shake should be enough, just give it a bit more time. Spores take a long time to settle back down, the movement during inoculation should be more than enough.
