colonization
    #4659441 - 09/14/05 11:30 AM (18 years, 6 months ago)

How long should it take for the cakes to completely colonize?  I am on about my 18th  day and the cakes have still not completely colonized only the bottom is showing colonization...and just the bottom....everything is looking nice and white with no evidence of contamination. Using PF tek....temp around 82-84 degrees.  what can I do to speed up colonization or what am I doing wrong?

I usually have pf cakes done in 8 to 10 days.

do you have anything covering your inoculation holes on your lids?

take the alum foil or tape off the holes if you have them covered.

if you don't have the holes covered...it might be your substrate.

Took mine a month. But that was my first grow, i'm sure there are ways out there to speed things up. But when your starting off, expect a little longer than what is projected.

After you have succesfully gotten threw your first grow, I highly recommend using WBS. Being able to shake your jars speeds up the growth so incredibly much faster! My quart jars colonized in 9 days after I first seen growth. About 2 weeks after inoculation.

Goodluck!

I second this one. My PF jars used to take weeks to colonize, it was painful. These days w/ WBS in quart jars, and only shaking once right after 1cc LC inoculations, I get quart jars fully colonized in <7 days consistently.

taping the jars really wills low it down? I didn't think air exchange was that important for jars.

Yes, it matters very much. Taping over PF jars is the worst component to the PF tek ever.

Thanx for some of the info...I used a technique that I saw on here where you put the put the foil on top of the substrate and then the top layer of vermiculite on top of the foil and close up with jar lid...supposed to be foolproof in preventing contamination.

by the way what is WBS?

Heh, don't apologize...I was just showing you the link. It's not really that common of a thing, but I used to use it tons when I did PF jars. It's really a great little tek.

Have taken the tape off of the inoc holes will see if that helps out as some colonization has already started.
