Car Sound Systems
    #4660760 - 09/14/05 05:16 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Im not sure what my budget is as of now. I have no living expenses and other than giving my parents about 200$ a month, the rest of the money I make is mine to spend.

Food and a CD a week are what its used for, other than saving.

I listen to "all" types of music. But I love bass. I want to have very nice sound quality.

My friend said he can get me a nice system for cheap but thats because its stolen. fuck that. I want to purchase this set up.

Can any one run me down on the basics of car audio?

JL Subs are good. The w-6's are powerful. W7's newer and even better, sort of expensive though.

JL sound quality sucks.

You can get much better subs from the smaller internet companies out there...

try soundsplinter.com

Every time I have every seen subs used is for crappy rap music. They call it bumpin. Maybe a small sub is okay but if you have those huge ones hooked to amps and shit it just makes all the rest of the music sound like its under water.

Yes, if you have crappy speakers/tweeters/etc.. Powerful subs is just going to drown out the rest of the music. I'd say get (1x)JL W7 if you can afford it. It's more on the expensive side, but that 1 sub is very powerful. Unless you want to go less money, i'd say look around ebay or something for a sweet deal that'll give you a set of subs, amp and the wires in a package deal or something.

Are any of these systems any good for someone who likes listening to music at a moderate volume? I have permanent ringing in my ears(tinnitus) already from being at to many concerts/clubs and listening to head phones/loud music. Now I try to preserve whats left by listening at a moderate level and using protection at concerts.

I think base sounds better on two high quality 10 inch subs, unless you listen to a lot of rap you really dont need a 12 or 15 inch sub. Alpine makes GREAT stuff.

To be honest, any sub that you add will make a noteable difference in sound. Save a few extra bucks if you're not in a car competition or something, you don't really need the top of the line most expensive stuff, unless your a music junkie and can't get buy with average gear, any subs will pound good for your personal enjoyment.

Image Dynamics IDMAX. The excursion of say a JL W7 without the massive pricetag and huge power requirements.

I would recommend Diamond Audio for subs. Get 1 12" D3 or D6 and 1 400-600W amp. You also need a good deck. Sony has some good ones at decent prices, but I am partial to Alpine myself.

What you should really concern yourself with is midrange and highs. See what size speakers are in your car now and get back on that.

I would say check out ebay.

Most of the cheap stuff there is overstock or last year's models. If you just do a search for "car subs" or "amps" you will get tons of ebay stores that have like 99% positive ratings.

I think I saw two 12" audiobahn subs for about $150 on ebay.

Most of the ebay stores have 90 day warranties and their stock are in "original unsealed factory boxes".

I would say get your speakers/subs/amps from ebay, then check out www.cardomain.com for good deals on in deck CD players. Most CD players can read MP3 files too, so you can burn a "data disc" on your comp and have 80MB of MP3s on a CD instead of buying special indeck players for iPods. Also, about 99% of the time cardomain has a special where it includes a harness specially made for your car for free. You can probably get a decent in-deck player for $150 off cardomain. If you have no experience installing the decks, then it's worth the extra money to have like best buy or ultimate electronics install it.

Next are sub boxes. It's not hard to build a run-of-the-mill sub box, there are TONS of how-to websites. All you need is MDF (cheap, cheap wood found at any lumber yard), liquid nails, srews, tape measure, and power saw. I guess if there's absolutely no one you know who has a power saw you can borrow you can buy a prebuilt one from a car audio store.

I hope you have friends who know how to hook your stuff up, otherwise you're better off just letting the car audio places rape you.

diamond audio makes some nice stuff.

Sony is terrible. Dont bu sony anything for car.

Good copmonents up front will make or break a system however. Teh diamond HEX components are good. So are elemental Designs ed6500's. Image Dynamics Chameleons, DLS Ultimates, Rainbow, CDT Euro's.

Even the decks are crap.

Pioneer
Alpine
Eclipse

Those are about the only good HU's that last, are built well, and have the best features.

Clarion is hit or miss, some high end stuff is really nice, but the middle to low end blows.

Kenwood is average
Sony is average to below average, they tend to not last very long.

go to best buy or somewhere and test out there shit for free, use the same subs with different amps to see how they preform.

Last time i went in there, about 2 weeks ago, i tried the pioneer (1) 10" 700w sub in the enclosed box (the sub was like 70, box like 120) and it blew down all the others, including all the 2 X 12" and such... but it helps to have a good amp, otherwise your not getting enough power to the sub, and it's gonna sound like shit... coincidently, the most expensive amp made the sub sound the best.. but anyway, for the price it's pretty decent for the box/sub.

and dont let anyone tell you that you NEED 2 subs, or that you NEED 12"... one 10" sub will do you more than you need.

my setup:
http://www.techronics.com/index.cfm?fuse...FTOKEN=29930350
http://www.techronics.com/index.cfm?fuse...FTOKEN=29930350
and some 4" alpines in the doors (came with the car)
the 6x9's are in seperate box's cause i dont have anywhere to mount them, (15 online for the pair)
the system bumps pretty good for what i need it for, mostly the dead, metal, and rock... i'm sure it could push some rap if it wanted to, but wouldnt have that super deep rumble bass

but definetly get some 6x9's, 3 or 4 way for sure..
