Question about mycellium texture...
    #4660086 - 09/14/05 03:17 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Here is some background info. I recently birthed 4 pf-tek rice flour/vermiculite cakes. Immediately after birthing I rinsed the cakes and dunked them for a little over 12 hours. When I took them out of the container, I noticed that the whiteness of the mycellium had faded slightly but I just attributed this to the excess moisture from dunking. Since placing them in my fruiting chamber, they seem to have recovered some of their 'fluffyness.' My concern is that when I came home about 30 minutes ago, I noticed that they are much fluffier than yesterday(though not too extreme). This is my first time growing, and I guess this is just the natural texture of mycellium. But I read about a contamination called cob web mold and im wondering if this might be a possiblity. Is cobweb mold a danger to fully colonized cakes?

Note: If it matters, the fruiting chamber is a large plastic bin with a plexiglass window on the top for light. I use a flourescent bulb a few hours a day and leave them by my window for some indirect sunlight while im at class. The humidity stopped measuring at 90% and just says 'hi' now and the temperature stays between 72-76 F. I also have an airpump running because i read its good for air exchange.

The growth you described is perfectly normal with cakes. While cobweb can infect cakes, it's pretty rare. You'll know it when you see it, as it takes on more of a hairy texture than mycelium.
