dried casing layer- help if you can
    #4659931 - 09/14/05 02:48 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

my casing layers look partially dry. i used verm/pete. i have a bubbler under perilite and water keeping the humidity high, the temps are about 78. i have heard not to directly mist the casings but they dry out in about a days time or less. why are they drying out with such high humidity and how can I keep em from drying?

I mist my casings with no problem, just try to get the finest sprayer/mister you can find and stay quite a bit away from the casing while misting, at least a few feet. If I'm wrong about this someone will correct me.

i believe you can mist it from far away until pins start forming, after that i dont think you want to mist.

Use a hand sprayer, and deliver a fine spray across your casing layer from a safe distance (12+ inches) while applying it as evenly as possible.  Hand misting the casing surface is the ONLY humidification I've had access to at times, and it works beautifully.  Perlite/bubblers alone cannot support primordia formation in most scenarios.

Once primordia forms, it is safe to continue misting your casing directly.  Hope that helps  :mushroom2:

Remember not to overdo it. 1-2 a day is plenty, as you want to achieve "near saturation". Once you learn what this looks like, it's like riding a bike and you'll know just what your casing needs for future grows.

yeah, i am on my first grow, and i decided to skip cakes altogether and went to casings, i got one in a poor man's with just perelite and it has stayed at near saturation and is doing great. it weird the that the more advanced set up is not doing as well.

That's been my experience too. Problem with semi-automated, or even automated setups is that they seem to weigh too much on one condition or the other, unless tweaked properly. Humidifiers can drench your grow if ran too often, and fans can dry out your grow if the humidity isn't replaced after fanning. Find the setup that works best for your situation, and work that happy middle ground somewhere. I'd suggest just a hand sprayer for now: Keep it simple.
