What if the saudis decided, with venezuela and the other opec countries, to suddenly sytop selling us any oil... suppose further that they had the only oil available on the planet, and we couldn't get any from anywhere except the cartel.
Faced with the sudden interruption of electric service and motor fuel, who here would support a choice to go to war with the cartel to get the oil from them?

How exactly are we supposed to wage a war without oil?

don't sidestep the question... there's a strategic oil reserve, remember?...

I'd support the war. I'd support it now, honestly. Using force to take what you need from people who are using the profits from the sales of this fungible commodity to train people to kll you isn't wrong in my book.

If this happened you would be talking WWIII. Europe, Russia, India and China would inevitable become involved.
War would be a very poor way to secure oil, it would most likely result in the destruction of the production facilities, which no one wants.

I'm sure a war would break out in such a case, and I'm also sure it would end up as the big one - WW3. It would stand a high probability of going nuclear. China, and possibly Russia, would join in the fighting (probably not on "our" side).
What's worse, is that this war would likely exhaust the remaining oil supplies. As the major powers made a desperate grab for the remaining black gold, they would use it up in the process. The major fields would probably switch hands a few times, too, so everyone would have a hand in draining the last supplies.

Its impossible for anyone to stop selling the USA oil. The oil sellers need the money and too many foreigners are invested in the USA. Also, if the US economy went down hill the rest of the world would follow.

Good point as well. Besides, the Saudi Royal Family likes having gilded palaces and billions in their Swiss bank accounts, so I don't think they're going to give up on it anytime soon....

A (relatively) more likely scenario would be if the Saudis stopped accepting only U.S. dollars as payment for their oil.
Of course the end result would be the same. War.

This would benefit the USA if the dollar keep going down. It would cause other countries to pay more for their oil, too.

If the dollar keeps going down, prices for American consumers keep rising. Have you noticed the real estate bubble? How about the rather steep rise in food and fuel prices over the past several years?

How do you figure? It might precipitate a cascade of countries dumping the dollar and going to other currencies as their reserve (or even, **gasp** gold). This would not be good for the U.S., who's economy is dependent upon other countries holding dollars in reserve and buying U.S. debt instruments.

If you're refering to the United States, one thing you neglected to consider is that most of the electricity is generated by coal and nuclear power. Google Utah, oil sands and oil shale, yes the USA has more oil in the form of oil sands than the mid east has in oil.

their economies would tank and their people would replace their governments with ones that wouldn't do something so stupid.

They have been trying to find an energy efficient and economical way to access the oil shale for a while. I remember reading an article recently that details an energy company that might have found a way to do it though.

they already do sell to china.
if they stopped selling oil to the US, they couldn't sell as much or as at high a price.
"Replace" how? You do know Saudi Arabia is a dictatorship?

supply and demand,
If Saudi stopped selling their oil to major players the price of oil would fall out. There whole way of existence would deteriorate, but yall have already covered this.
Anywayz we would just invade, and take it, then turn round and sell it back to them at a drastically much higher price.
Boyz and girls, the number one reason for most wars is resources. If you have to take shit from other people to insure the survival of you, so be it. AMEN.
