Unconditional Love vs Competition
    #4658350 - 09/14/05 03:16 AM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Icelander: For some, competition is a way of life. It's the only way they can relate to others and their world. They have never had an experience of unconditional love and so don't believe it exists as a state of being where one can operate from, all or in part.

For ALL competition is a way of life.

When you apply for a job, do you hope to be rejected or selected over all the other candidates?

Is it OK if your company or business loses contracts to other companies and you are out of work ?

When you bid on a house that you want to own, do you hope that someone else get's it?

When you meet a lady that you like, don't you hope she will end up in your arms?

If attacked by a mugger or a German shepherd, would you not defend yourself?

At the grocery store do you choose the shortest line?

Do you not try to minimize your taxes?

All of that is competition and yet you do not indulge in any of that?

The biological blank slate that was you when you were born was because one particular sperm beat out the other 10 million. I doubt that sperm #103,687 that became you let the others go first in the most important and competive race of your life.

It is why humans are here today -  because we are competitors and kicked ass on other large predators; not because we are fluffy bunnies, er snuggly bears.

Can we start a bonfire and burn all of the New Age books?

It starts with bookburning, it ends with genocide.

It is the combination between ruthless competitor and snuggly bear which made humans take over the planet.

Ah, but when you won her heart, will you be a ruthless competitor or a snuggly bear to merge your DNA with her? The former is rape, the latter gives the sweet love and longterm relationship of the parents the child needs to grow up and be a more successful organism.

You can't seperate them or you lose the whole.

It starts with bookburning, it ends with genocide.

It does? I just tried an experiment. I took the book "Mystic Path to Cosmic Mind Power" out on the driveway, doused it with gasoline and set it on fire.

I have no urge to kill anyone and I have been watching the news. Nothing!

Unless I am responsible for what is happening in the Sudan, I think your hypothesis falls flat.

Perhaps in a utopian society we would be able to survive with only unconditional love. However, in the current society we live in, there is competition. To survive essentially implies competing to a certain extent. Otherwise, we might end up looking like an amotivational junky.

By performing the act of competition itself, maybe we are practicing unconditional love (some of us at least, who do so consciously). You see in the Bhagavad Gita, Sri Krisha tells Arjuna that when dealing with people who are ignorant to the way of everything, don't try to show them the path, for it will do no good and only delude them more.

So in that sense, by playing along with their game of competition, perhaps we are practicing unconditional love.

Plus, it seems as if some of your statements (eg. If attacked by a mugger or a German shepherd, would you not defend yourself? At the grocery store do you choose the shortest line? ) are going so far as to say that unconditional love implies either inaction or purposely making life difficult for yourself, which wouldn't be unconditional love for yourself.

How would a Utopian society be any different?

Wouldn't we still try to grow the best, biggest and hardiest crops? Would we not still compete against other creatures that try to eat those crops?

Would there be no mating or leaders?

Would ther be no competition against the elements or would everyone sleep naked outside?

Wouldn't we still try to grow the best, biggest and hardiest crops? Would we not still compete against other creatures that try to eat those crops?

Why would we need to? Perhaps some might do so in the spirit of fun and entertainment, but no one would need to actually compete to have the best crops...all would be enjoyed by all. Some creatures may eat those crops, but others, such as diseases and insects, may have to be rerouted to another source. At least the insects.

That brings up an interesting point though: if we have unconditional love towards EVERYTHING, that would inevitably include viruses and bacteria. So UC (unconditional) love towards ourselves must NOT take the form of ignoring our own needs.

Would there be no mating or leaders?

Mating I think depends largely on the people you ask. If they want to mate, then dandy, if not, also dandy. Leaders...well when I envision utopia I tend to see more of a democratic socialistic environment or even plain socialism. However, that's proved largely impossible (except in NZ...why I'd really like to live there) in today's world, but to your question, no I don't think there would be a need for leaders.

Would ther be no competition against the elements or would everyone sleep naked outside?

By that viewpoint just about every act can be considered competition. Breathing could even be competition against death! But that's silly. There are basic physiological needs that one must meet to survive (such as food, water, shelter). If you don't show UC love to yourself and meet those needs, then you will die, which certainly is NOT showing UC love to yourself.

True but it centered around a oneliner in the original post whereas the point was made in the rest of my post.

"It starts with bookburning, it ends with genocide."
If you want to eradicate ideas, you might end up destroying the people that have them. I don't think you will start a genocide on New Age hippies any day soon but bookburning is a fundamentalist act.

--When the Shoah was nigh, they burned books
--When Sharia is nigh, they burn books

I was just warning against the mentality behind making a bonfire of the books that hold ideas you disapprove of.

Will you now please address the issue of the necessity of both competition and love that I brought up?

Maybe there's a splash of Norwegian blood in my bloodline, but somehow this idea appeals to me.
On the other hand it might be a flashback from the Lord of the Rings movies.

If everyone slept naked outside, I'm thinkin' there would be mating....

With the way you are using the word "competition", even the slightest invoked movement would be a competition....  :smirk:

Gravity is a competitive bitch - gotta~ love it (unconditionally)........!?

Competition focuses on objectives, cooperation focuses on processes. Both are needed as they represent part of the yin and yang.

The problem with mankind and mainly, the occidental society, is the unbalance between both. Competition is far more present than cooperation. The results ? .... Just take a look at the world ...

If you attach emotions to physics phenomena, you might as well say that Gravity is the group hug of unconditionally loving Atoms

Gravity loves you so much it wants to press you tight to it. A black hole won't even let go so that must be perfect love.

Gravity is only competitive if you want to float on air without effort  :fairy:

If gravity is competitive then it is competitive with a sdpiritual entity (you) who unlike the material universe desires to fly independent of gravity. That would likely mean gravity is a spiritual force and that would make matter an entity rather than a substance.

You catch on because it is! Do you use air conditioning or heating? Is that not a fight against the weather?

Do you pay top dollar for every item you buy or do you shop wisely?

All of life is a fierce competition to get WHAT YOU WANT!

Even the author of the book I burned FOUGHT to get his manuscript printed.

Hehe, gravity has always brought me down, but I love it anyways....

And it is kind enough to let me float effortlessly in water, just not in the air....  I am cool with that....

The scary thing is, I want EVERYTHING, but don't want to HAVE to have ANYTHING....
But alas, being human is to be needy - forcing at least some forms of competition, but not necessarily fierce....

Perhaps unconditional love cannot properly be put up against competition in a competition....?
