What are visuals, why?
    #4656814 - 09/13/05 08:03 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

Id like to see what others think about audio/visual effects and where they come from and why they are much more intense for some people.....

No need for opinions. Do some searching and you'll find some information. I believe it's fairly well-researched.

Here's a little excerpt from Wikipedia:

"LSD affects a huge number of receptors, including all dopamine receptor subtypes, all adrenoreceptor subtypes as well as many others. LSD binds to most serotonin receptor subtypes except for 5-HT3 and 5-HT4. The hallucinogenic effects of LSD are attributed to its partial agonist effects at 5-HT2A receptors. Exactly how this produces the drug's effects is unknown, but it is thought that it works by increasing excitation in cortical layers which facilitate the spread of information throughout the cortex. Through this, LSD causes parts of the brain which would not normally be activated by a given stimulus to become engaged."

With some looking, you can find a lot more in-depth material than this.

the nature of psychedelic drugs is to change the way our brains process stimuli as well as to change the "filter settings". there fore we perceive everyday reality in a completely different way. so where walls would usually be rigid structures they now breath and sway. thats my take on it.

I think they come from the dark areas of your mind. One
of mine, that keeps popping up tripping, is I think I can see,
and can talk to ghosts. A couple of weeks ago, I had too keep
looking down, at my hands because I was sure I had killed a friend,
and had blood all over me, and the whole house turned into a haunted
house, with cobwebs, witches, and demons, I think because I had been thinking about Halloween coming up in a few weeks.

I think that what happens is that psychedelics let way more information in to the point of overload so you start seeing and hearing in so much detail your brain starts to feed back on itself. Also the inhibiting of seratonin receptors creates a waking dream state, so maybe the higher the seratonin blocking the less senses are teathered to external reality and the more the become independent of the outside world like in a dream.

Good speculations.
I don't know how the visuals are created, but i can say with some certainty that the other senses are effected as a direct result of the visual distortion. I am someone who normally feels like sight is the greatest sense. But when i trip, i feel like my eyes are inferior to other sensing organs, particularly my ears (the same way that a blind person acquires acute hearing). I think that the brain realizes the visual distortions given by psychedelics for what they are, and knows that the person's vision has been compromised, and therefore strengthens the other senses.

What do I think??? this chat doesnt work with such elongated conclusions cause you are then rejected as a message poster given the time it takes.
Im glad some are not willing to admit that they know the answer.

MODERATOR NOTICE: Stemmer - you're fresh off the ban and you keep on continuing a behavior known as "postwhoring", as well as being rude to the people who choose to respond to your thread. If you keep this up you will either be ignored by most people or you get banned for consistently breaking the rules. Please behave. This is yet another warning.

You asked a question and he gave you a good answer. Threes certainly no need to criticize him for giving you an educated answer now is there?

The next morning my parents said we were going to the hospital. I thought two of my friends were sitting in the front seat and i thanked them for getting me away from my crazy parents.
Even in the emergency room i would see paint flying off the walls spiraling all through the room, and would hallucinate holding a pipe or a cig in my hand and i would take a nice long drag, blow out the smoke, look at my hands, and nothing would be there.
