Calcium Question
    #4657404 - 09/14/05 12:27 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Now that i know that the Lilly Miller Garden Lime I bought won't work, and i have no other choices locally, I found some Calcium supplement pills... will these work? Its calcium (as oyster shell) and vitamin D (as cholacalciferol... whatever the fuck that is).

This is something i already have in my house, so its not like i care how much it costs as no one else is gonna use it! Will it work?

What are you using? A 50/50 mix, or what?

You can get crushed oyster shell at pet stores. Hydrated lime can be obtained at a nursery, hardware store, etc. I use the two and get great results.

The hydrated lime must be used with caution. Read up on it under the casing section of the website under 50/50+ tek. I use less than it says to be safe.

okay, no there are NO other choices. I must live in the goddamn twilight zone cuz no one has even heard of this shit. I've gone and looked, it doesn't exist. I'd have to order it off of one of our sponsors, which would be no big deal except that i need it TOMORROW. actually tonight would be better, but i think i can wait 12 hrs or so. had i'd known it was gonna be this difficult to locate any of these supplies, i'd have started looking earlier.

If the soil in your area is naturally alkaline, lime will be hard to find. However, pickling lime in the grocery store is calcium carbonate and works great. Pet stores also have calcium carbonate in granular form for reptiles, as well as oyster shell.

If nothing else, gypsum is an excellent source of calcium, but it also has sulphur(both necessary for good fruiting) so it doesn't change the ph much.

You can order hydrated lime by second day air at the link below. Just do a search on their site for hydrated lime.
